As some of you may know from social media, Dirk and I recently adopted 2 kids from foster care and it has been the most exhausting yet rewarding endeavor of our lives. Luna (11) and Casper (8) have brought so much joy into our home.
We began our foster journey in January 2020, RIGHT before the world shut down with a global pandemic. When the kids were finally placed in our home in October 2020, we jumped into action getting them enrolled in school (which was still 100% virtual at that point).
Imagine trying to build brand new relationships with TWO kids you’ve never met before, while also trying to keep them safe in a global pandemic, while also having to be a full-time homeschool teacher, while also trying to manage a small business… and all of that during an election year!
Does it make you want to pull your hair out? Haha, yeah. Us too.
But honestly, what better way to jump into a new experience than head-first. Am I right?! October 14th is our one year anniversary with the kids living in our home, and things are finally starting to feel like normal routine.
Luna was accepted into the vocal program at Classen SAS middle school. She also landed one of the 14 spots on the volleyball team (out of 84 students who tried out), AND auditioned / got accepted into her school’s Circle The State choir performance program. Outside of school, she has joined a local Girl Scouts troop and loves to go camping. Her favorite music is country & pop, and her favorite song is the girl-version of “My Boy” by Elvie Shane (if you’ve never heard it, grab a tissue and have a listen because it’ll pull on your heart strings!) She is growing into such a lovely young lady who is discovering her own place in the world. She dreams of being a marine biologist when she grows up.
Casper is a little spitfire, a rambunctious 8-year-old boy who loves building legos, singing in the car, and making crafts out of cardboard. He plays on the school soccer team (his favorite position is goalie), and he recently earned his fist 2 badges with his Cub Scout troop. While he can be full of energy, he is also extremely tender-hearted and hides tiny love notes all around the house. His very favorite thing in the whole world is the 15 minutes of snuggle/story time before bed. His favorite music is country, and his favorite song is “Jolene” by Dolly Parton. (His second-favorite song is also “My Boy” by Elvie Shane).
Life outside of kids is keeping us busy as well. Dirk was invited to play a 10-year reunion show with his old band “Blacklist Royals” at a major punk rock festival in Florida over Halloween weekend. In addition to being a Dad and co-managing our real estate business, he is practicing every day to prepare for the music festival which brings in thousands of people from all over the world. He has also been studying real estate investment, so holler at him if you have any questions!
In addition to growing our family, we are growing our business! This year we’ve added a Transaction Coordinator, and an Operations Assistant to our team so we can better serve our clients and their housing needs. This has been a long-time coming and we are so grateful to our loyal clients who have helped us expand by referring their friends & family our way. We couldn’t do all of this without your trust and support.
